A Little About Me

My Past

My earliest recollection of being interested in my health and wellness was as a teenager when I would wake at 6am to do the 20 Minute Workout TV program before school.  (I've just totally dated myself).  

Over the years I have experimented with vegetarianism, paleo, AIP, and even a little keto, aerobics, weight training, and boot camp.  Through my experience it became clear that each person's lifestyle is individual and one mold doesn't fit all.

My health over the last few years  declined.  I was exhausted all the time, gaining weight at an accelerated rate, bloated, achey and miserable.  It wasn't until I found a very knowledgeable Natural Path that I started to get answers and finally on a path to wellness.  Also, I was inspired to be on a path to becoming a Health and Nutrition Coach.  I believed the knowledge I gained through my own health journey could potentially help someone else.  So I enrolled at the Nutraphoria School of Holistic Nutrition and received my Diploma as a Health and Nutrition Coach.

My Present

I enjoy helping and assisting clients with their health goals.  Cooking classes, workshops, and one on one consultations are just a few ways I  provide wellness services to others.

I recently married my awesome man who just happens to be a Red Seal Chef. He is a great advisor in the recipe department and an even bigger support for the cooking classes.  

My Future

Learning is a life long process and I plan on continuing my studies to become a Licensed Holistic Nutritionist because I truly believe a Holistic approach to a person's wellness is the best approach.

What's in Your Winter Home Apothecary?

Winter, for those of us that live in colder climates we love it and dread it at the same time.

Snow is beautiful and offers many fun activities like skiing, sledding, snowball fights, building snowmen and snow forts. Our childhoods were spent playing outside in the snow.  Mittens soggy, noses red, and cheeks a little frost bit.  Outdoor ice rinks are in full swing when the temperatures dip, offering a place for folks to skate and stay active. 

Winter also brings more colds, viruses and flus. Why is that?  Being outside does not make you sick in the winter but a few factors can contribute to lower immunity and higher spread of germs. Viruses live longer outside the human body when it's colder out. They thrive in cold, dry air. Many homes in the winter become very dry creating an active space for influenza to grow. It's important to have a winter home apothecary to stay healthy through the cold months. These are my top 5....



Vitamin D

Vitamin D: In the winter, there is less sunlight and we wear more layers of clothes not allowing for the necessary Vitamin D to be absorbed by our bodies.  In the summer we typically spend a lot more time outdoors with a lot of exposed skin allowing for a healthy dose of Vitamin D absorption. Foods rich in Vit D3 are: Salmon and fatty fish, beef liver and organ meats, cod liver oil, ghee (clarified butter), and egg yolks

Vitamin D or the "sunshine vitamin", is necessary for healthy immunity (as well as many other bodily functions). Look for Vitamin D3 to add to your winter home apothecary.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C: It has long been thought to prevent a cold, however, research found that taking vitamin C everyday did not reduce a person’s risk of getting one.

What the vitamin can do, though, is lower severity of symptoms and shorten a cold’s duration.

This is particularly important during winter when there is a spike in people suffering a cold. 

 Good sources include oranges, red and green peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and potatoes. 

A definite must in your winter home apothecary!

Echinacea

 Echinacea 

A little plant with big healing power. Its name comes from the Greek word for hedgehog (echinos) because its prickly seed head resembles the spines of angry hedgehog. 

 Herbalists recommend echinacea to shorten the duration of the common cold and flu, and reduce sore throat, cough, and fever. Science backs up the power of echinacea to treat upper respiratory tract infections and much more.  A great addition to your winter home apothecary.

Thyme

Thyme

Aromatic thyme yields powerful antiseptic properties that kill bacteria and help ease bronchial ailments, from tonsillitis to garden variety sore throats.  

Making a soothing cup of tea with thyme, lemon, honey and ginger helps clear congestion from the lungs and bronchial passages  .

A definite must in your winter home apothecary.

Elderberry

Elderberry 

Elderberry has both antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties and is also an immune system stimulant, making it a powerhouse herb. Many take elderberry to avoid illness and boost their immune system, but even taken at the onset of a cold or influenza it may help reduce the duration of the illness.

The most popular way to take elderberry is in syrup form, easily purchased from your local health food store or online retailer. You can also make it at home for a fraction of the cost. You simply need dried elderberries, honey, and water to make a simple syrup.

Recipes

Oatmeal in a Jar

243 calories

Total Time:8 hours

Overnight oats in a mason jar (no cooking required)! A hearty healthy breakfast packed with fiber, vitamins, and nutrients.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/4 cup quick oats
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or skim, soy)
  • 1/4 medium banana, sliced (freeze the rest for smoothies!)
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup
  • pinch cinnamon

for the topping:

  • 1 tbsp chopped pecans (or any nut)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Place all the ingredient in a jar, shake, cover and refrigerate overnight.
  2. The next morning, add your favorite crunchy toppings such as nuts, granola, etc and enjoy!
  3. If you prefer it warm, microwave on low for 1 min. (take lid off first)
